Mary (1980-2020) was a beloved mother, daughter and sister. Born to Diego and Katy Sanchez on September 24, 1980, in Birmingham, Ala, her family later relocated to Marietta, Ga. Wilson went on to attend Uni Tech where her classmates knew her as a “Helluva Engineer.”

I was a Structural Major. My career in sales engineering and marketing started and was both rewarding and fascinating. The University laid the groundwork and I took every advantage that it gave me. Shout out to all the 2000s grads out there!

I’m happy to report that the years since Uni have been productive. I recently accepted a new position as a project manager for a technology company and moved into my first condo. I have also assembled several pieces of furniture without professional assistance, an accomplishment that deserves considerably more recognition than it receives.
Outside of work, I’ve taken up gardening, joined a recreational softball league, and traveled whenever my schedule allows. I still see several friends from Uni regularly, and despite having respectable careers and mortgages, we become exactly the same people we were in college whenever we're together.

It’s hard to believe how much has happened since graduating from Uni. After beginning my career in communications, I recently stepped into a new position as marketing director for a nonprofit organization focused on strengthening our local community. The role has given me an opportunity to combine the skills I use professionally with work that means a great deal to me personally.
There have been exciting changes outside of work, too. My husband and I recently moved into our first home, and we’ve been enjoying putting down roots in our community. I’m grateful for the experiences and friendships I found at Uni, many of which continue to be part of my life today.

We come from this incredible school, which gave us the tools to achieve, work within and build communities, and do transformational things. Why do we come back? Why do we stay connected? Why do our hearts leap a bit wherever and whenever we meet a fellow alum from any generation, class year or major? Because we have a deeply soulful connection to this place—and what we achieved here together.

Some of my favorite memories from Uni revolve around Homecoming. My friends and I would make an entire weekend of it, starting with Friday-night activities and ending with the game and celebrations on Saturday. We loved seeing the campus filled with students, alumni, families, and familiar faces.
Years later, Homecoming has become an annual tradition for my family. I’ve enjoyed showing my kids around campus, sharing stories from my college days, and introducing them to some of the friends who made those years so memorable. It’s wonderful to return to a place that still feels a little like home.
